Until the end of March, landlords will be sending out notices of rent-hikes. Once again this year, the raises they are asking for have gotten higher, and their "requests" are often carried out in abusive ways. Landlords keep us scared, and make us believe that if we refuse their rent-hikes, we'll be kicked out of the apartment. That is FALSE!

Such rent-hikes are directly related to the current housing crisis. The gentrification of our neighborhoods -- the arrival of the newly rich who
live in condos -- makes the crisis worse.

In the midst of this housing crisis, landlords have all the power and the real-estate developers are just thinking about the profits they'll make at the expense of neighborhood residents, a growing number of whom risk finding themselves on the streets on July 1st. Those "privileged" enough to find a place will be forced to live in sub-standard conditions in apartments that are in disrepair or too small -- never mind the insanely high cost of housing on the private market, which contributes in a major way to the making tenants poorer. In this context, public funds must only be used to finance social housing and should in no way subsidize the private market.

This is why we've chosen the end of March to shout loud and clear: https://florafox.com/de/!

We call affinity groups and individuals from across the Island of Montreal to take autonomous actions against the condo projects that are destroying our neighborhoods, or to take part in one of the actions that has already been planned. On March 30th, it's our turn to show politicians and developers that resistance to their capitalist interests has only just begun...
